Choosing A Domain Name To Make Money Blogging

written by Dave Drew on July 20th, 2011

What can you possibly believe about choosing a domain name to make money blogging when so many different people have voiced their opinions online about how to choose a domain name that’s marketable.

Well, let’s just lay out some cold hard facts that are undeniable in today’s Internet and search engine world.

I went through a $2,000 Internet marketing course not too long ago that did nothing but preach about having the keyword phrase in the domain name to make sure you could easily get to page one, position one of Google for that exact keyword phrase. Well, that worked a while back, but it doesn’t work now, because Google changed their algorithms. Now, a keyword phrase in the domain name doesn’t have the importance it once had. That’s too bad, because I could have easily had the number one position by now for howtomakemoneyblogging.net with an additional 4,000 visitors per month from that keyword phrase.

Make Money Blogging With Almost Any Domain Name

Right now, with a little work and patience you can get pretty much any domain name on page one of Google for basically any keyword phrase. I will point out one great example in the domain name, BringTheFresh.com and the keyword phrase “make money online” just to show you how this works.

As of the last time I looked, bringthefresh.com is in position five on page one of Google for the keyword phrase “make money online.” In other words, it’s quite obvious that you don’t need to have the keyword phrase “make money online” in your domain name to get on page one for that keyword phrase.

choosing a domain nameBringthefresh.com hasn’t been around for long as of the day this post was published. So, how does a person get a domain name like that on page one for such a competitive keyword phrase that offers 673,000 monthly searches? It takes a little bit of work and the right knowledge that you are well on your way to learning.

What’s the lesson in all this? Just keep your domain name short, simple, memorable and hopefully related to your niche.

Many people use there birth name, and some people pick memorable, catchy names. It really doesn’t matter a whole lot what name you choose … just as long as you can come up with a catchy, shorter name and back it up with the content on a continuous basis. Well, there is a lot more to make money blogging than just adding content to your blog. Hopefully you’ll stick around here long enough to learn all the secrets of marketing your blog.

Take a look at Mashable.com. Pretty short, unique and memorable name there. How about Incomediary.com? Also short and has a lot of meaning.

If you were into skin care, you could come up with a unique name like skinzen.com. Or, maybe imagepep.com for a blog about photography. These domain names are probably gone already. I’m only offering you ideas.

Take your time and brainstorm names before you make that domain name purchase. Once you decide on a name, use GoDaddy.com to buy your domain name.

Make a list of names. Sit on your choices for a few days. Really take some time to think logically about your choices before locking in your domain name to make money blogging. One day, three of us all sat around and wrote down 200 names before we came up with a domain name for a business we were creating.

I have another blog about titled masmoola. The blog is about saving money and the domain name is Spanish slang for “More Money.” Most everyone knows what moola is, and a huge percentage of the world is Spanish speaking. The name is also short and I felt it was somewhat catchy and easy to remember.

As far as howtomakemoneyblogging.net, I chose this domain name back when there was an importance of having the keyword phrase in the name, but since things have changed, now I will have to work a little harder to get to page one of Google for that keyword phrase. I’m not concerned though, because I know the secrets to doing that.

The bottom line for choosing your domain name is short, catchy and memorable if possible.

If you are thinking about using your birth name for your blog name, hopefully you have a magnetic personality and an exciting niche that millions of people are interested in.

Do some research and see some of the names top bloggers use. Take a look at the list of top bloggers I added to another post to give you ideas for domain names to make money blogging.

Keep in mind, you don’t have to buy your domain name right this second. Take a few days to really think about names and the niche you choose.

I have one more point for this post. This might be obvious to you, but make sure to choose your niche before choosing your domain name. Knowing the topic you will be talking about on a regular basis will help you choose a domain name.

  1. The lesson that I learned from this (and is my number one priority in blogging): “Just keep your domain name short, simple, memorable and hopefully related to your niche.”
    Couldn’t agree more.

A blogger has to think of what he is passionate about so that there will be consistency on the blog that he will create. It really has to be thought of carefully.

  2. I should have read your post before I picked long domain name! Nevertheless, this is great information to remember for next time. You said google changed its algorithm. How did you come to know about that?

  3. I think that “short, catchy, and memorable” are the keys to choosing a domain name Dave. The best thing about it is if your domain is short and catchy it will be memorable. Marketing 101 and a really great post.

    • If you get this reply, check back on the post for the domain name ideas I posted as an addition to give you ideas for finding unique domain names. All of these domain names were available at the time I looked. I can’t guarantee they will be available for long.

  4. Well, that’s why I haven’t started with WordPress yet… I am compiling all the tips, so that I am well prepared when I do. Thanks

  5. I found this post very useful. Usually when looking for a domain name when you try to buy a name that is already taken, your first instinct is to lengthen the name and add something to the end and hope that its not taken aswell. This mistake can destroy the long term benifit of your site and your technique solves it!

  6. I think once you establish yourself, the small names will suit the purpose.. But to get a head start, i would strongly suggest domain names with keywords… this will help the blog get extra traffic through google search as well… So combine that with the effort we put in, the blog income can turn into 6 digit pretty quickly… Just like your blog dave.. the keyword is so vital…
